Greek Delegation Honours Lord Byron at Saint Mary Magdalene Church in Hucknall
On Saturday, December 21st, the national delegation of the Ministry of Culture of Greece and the Mesolonghi Byron Society paid tribute to the renowned Philhellene poet Lord Byron, at his burial site in Saint Mary Magdalene Church, Hucknall. The solem visit marked a continuation of the bicentennial commemorations of Byron’s death and his enduring legacy.
The director of Literature and Arts from Ministry of Culture, Mrs Sissy Papathanassiou, and the director of the Mesolonghi Byron Society, Mrs Rodanthi Rosa Florou, led the delegation in honouring Byron’s contributions to Greece’s struggle for independence. In a moving gesture, they laid flowers at the Byron’s family vault and the director general of antiquities and cultural heritage, Mrs Olympia Vikatou and Mrs Papathanasiou, proudly held the Greek flag above the poet’s resting place, symbolising Greece’s gratitude and reverence for his sacrifices and literary genius.
