Greek Delegation Visits Burgage Manor, Celebrating Lord Byron and Bicentennial Commemorations

On Saturday, December 21, 2024, the Director of the Mesolonghi Byron Society, Mrs. Rodanthi Rosa Florou, led a memorable visit alongside the national delegation of Ministry of Culture of Greece to Burgage Manor, Southwell, Nottinghamshire. This historic site was once home to the great Romantic and Philhellene poet, Lord Byron.

The Greek delegation was warmly welcomed by the current owner of Burgage Manor, renowned Byronist Geoffrey C.Bond, OBE. Mr Bond, a passionate advocate for Byron’s legacy, guided the delegation through the Manor’s historic rooms, where Byron lived and penned some of his iconic works. With heartfelt enthusiasm, he shared insights into Byron’s life and the profound impact of his poetry, offering the visitors a unique glimpse into the intimate world of the celebrated poet.

In a touching display of respect and friendship, Mr. Bond adorned each room with both the Greek and British flags, symbolising the deep cultural ties and mutual admiration between Greece and the United Kingdom. Furthering the spirit of generosity, he presented Mrs. Florou with a signed copy of his latest book, “ BYRON’S MANOR -Birthplace of his Poetry”. This gesture deeply moved Mrs.Florou, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the hospitality and the enduring respect shown to Byron’s legacy.

The visit to Burgage Manor was a highlight of the Greek delegation’s activities in Nottingham, marking the bicentennial commemorations of the Lord Byron’s death. The event underscored Byron’s enduring influence as a poet and his pivotal role as a Philhellene who championed Greece’s struggle for independence.
